It was a question that Billy had been asking himself a lot lately. Even now, as he flew through what remained of Metropolis's once majestic skyline, he wondered to himself why he continued to fight. Unlike most of the other heroes, who had families or lovers to care for, Billy had no real reason to continue in this world. He should have left for another planet, or maybe another dimension. Hell, maybe he should have found some kind of magic bullet and put it in his brain.
In his flight over the city, Shazam found the faint glimmer of a fire, coming from up in one of the skyscrapers. There, he found a family of three, huddled around the fire and desperately trying to shield it from the eyes of any Doomsdays that might be running around.
"There's still space on the Watchtower for...well, I guess we call you guys 'civilians.' I think that's kinda un-PC, though, or something like that." With a push of a button on his belt, a boom tube to the Watchtower opened, allowing the family entrance to the sanctuary. But of course, as things had a habit of going to shit for Billy Batson, a Doomsday clone leaped in through the window just as they were heading for the portal.
It was at this moment that Billy wondered why he shouldn't have just found some kind of magic bullet to shoot himself with. Were things just going to continue like this?
"GO!" He shouted to the family, then flew headfirst into the Doomsday, flinging them right out of the building. Through the air they flew, trading punches. One of the monster's fists managed to knock Shazam's hood down, revealing his raven black hair - and his eyes that glowed with cackling electricity.
"Oh, you done FUCKED UP now." The World's Mightiest Mortal gripped Doomsday solidly by his shoulders and spun around in a blur, building up enough momentum to then throw the behemoth away, sending him sailing miles upon miles through the sky.
That left Billy now floating just a few stories above the streets, putting his hood back up. "Never touch the damn cloak. I tell people that all the time. You never see Batman gettin' his cowl knocked off. Sheesh..." He floated back up to the floor that the family was on, where he was pleased to discover that they had managed to get through the boom tube, which was now closing.
"At least some things still go right."
